Sam Russell Fabricates the Truth

So another Simclar factory closes its doors with the loss of 420 jobs. Simclar International CEO Sam Russell, issues a press release claiming “Simclar (Ayrshire) has experienced challenging business conditions in the last two years as a result of severe drops in demand for its products following the loss of a number of key customer contracts”
His actions even draw sympathy from Alf Young writing in the Business section of The Herald http://www.theherald.co.uk/business/comment/display.var.1177201.0.0.php
So that’s that then, the good people open their morning papers and shake their heads at another unavoidable nail in the coffin for the Scotland manufacturing industry. Sam Russell MBE, business entrepreneur of the year 2001 walks away, his public persona in tact, the smoke and mirrors elusion complete.

This is the facade that Russell would have us all believe. What the 8th richest man in Scotland fails to mention is in the last two years Simclar (Ayrshire) Ltd turned a profit of £4.7m. The “severe drops in demand for its products following the loss of a number of key customer contracts” quote couldn’t be further from the truth. Simclar (Ayrshire) had a full order book for the next 9 months with her existing customers such a NCR & Motorola quoting for new business. We had just won a major order to supply 150 sheet metal parts to Alcatel-Lucent, a major supplier to the telecommunications industry for the global market. Alcatel-Lucent achieved combined sales of Euro 18.6 billion in 2005.

Does this really sound to you like a company facing “experienced challenging business conditions”? No, Sam Russell’s ploy was simple. Transfers all Simclar (Ayrshire) assets over to Simclar International i.e. property, machinery, material & stock then transfers all the existing and future contracts, then call in the administrators. Jobs a good un. Sam walks away with all the Scottish Executive grants tightly tucked away in the back pocket of his neatly tailored suit leaving you the British taxpayer to foot the bill for minimum statutory redundancy payment.

Let’s make no mistake here; Sammy boy’s no local hero. This is a man who doesn’t even trust his own wife Christina enough to hold more than a 5% stake in a company she helped create. Sam Russell has exploited every corporate legal loop hole known to man with scant disregard for human emotions to pursue his own personal pursuit of greed.

Having worked for Simclar (Ayrshire) for the last 17 years I’ve experiencing first hand the social train wreck this guy has left behind in North Ayrshire. Our longest serving workmate had 28 years service under his belt. As Russell’s long-term goal of becoming a $500m turnover company by 2007 looks imminent, ex workmates and I are facing the prospect of going cap in hand to the DSS for Crisis Loans. I know that our factory sit-ins & picket line protests will probably amount to f**k all but who knows perhaps the DTI will bring this asset stripping pariah to task before he gets the chance to pull the same ‘cut n run’ hatchet job with the 300 workers currently still employed at Dunfermline.

I would like to finish this blog by thanking all the working class comrades who turned up at all hours of the day and night in sub-zero temperatures to pledge their Solidarity & stand in front of over zealous police officers to block wagons leaving Riverside. You know who you are. How come we managed to get through so many padlocks, chains & Superglue?

I will leave you with Sam Russell’s legacy so far,

Sam closes FCI Gourock with the loss of 500 jobs in 2003
Sam closes Simclar (Dundee) Ltd with the loss of 50 jobs in 2005
Sam closes UPMex a Preston based company with the loss of 150 jobs in 2005 (now, Simclar Seating Technologies)
Sam closes Simclar (Ayrshire) with the loss of 420 jobs in 2007

Simclar Dunfermline, to be continued…….

Take care,
Jack

The way Simclar workers have been treated is a disgrace. I wish to you well with your struggle for justice.

I came to this blog to find out about what is going on,Im worried now!I work at one of the Simclar factories in the USA. Printed it out to show others that we DO have something to worry about!

Well, I'm a Simclar US employee laid off at the hands of Sam Russell and Barry Pardon--despite being the member of a small department with qualifications only matched by two other Simclar employees world-wide, neither of which at my particular facility. So, reading this comes as no surprise to me. I only hope the government shows an interest in where the tax credits for employing people just like me are going.

yep, it's now crossing overseas...Simclar US and Mexico are a complete mess. any of the experienced employees in mid-us have left the company and there is no experienced people left. but, look at the stocks, going down down down everyday. soon, their whole corporation will be belly up

I Used to work for Simclar, the way they fuction is a joke, from the very top down.
Corners are cut, customers are lied to with so many things, from materials being used ( charged for top grade materials then given much cheaper, it wont be noticed right away as the parts get painted ), medical equipment that is manufactured that is sub standard - this stuff has people lives relying on it!!!

Sam russell is a cowboy, a fly by night, yet he still manages to trade.

He closed ayrshire down, same with Dundee, done the same with a company called techdyne in Livingston, people went home on Friday, went to work on Monday to find the building locked with chains and not a thing inside, all gone, crazy that he is allowed to do this.

And it DOES all come on his instruction, he knows fine well what all goes on, he encourages it, threatening people with their jobs if they dont carry out things, lair, cheat, charlatan, joker, fraud, lots of names for this guy........

It's because Russell is a penny pinching prick. He has never paid minimum wage in his life. He will move all the jobs to his chinese factory where he can continue to exploit workers and pay them even less; than their European counterparts. The man has no fucking regard for anyone, I hope he loses his entire business.

Used to work at the Dunfermline Cable Harnessing facility, and I have to say that I have never come across a more amateur setup in my life. The whole place worked on a culture of bullying from the management (who I'm sure would have had difficulty organising a social event in a brewery).
Realised these factors within a week of joining, left after 5 months to go to a much more professional electronics company who actually VALUED their workforce

The Dunfermline Set-up was run like a concentration camp. I saw workers being physically assaulted by Management. The management were cowboys, not higher educated, no diplomacy what so ever. You couldn't even use the toilets unless you signed a logsheet and got a key from the Production Line Supervisor!!!

Not all management at simclar dunf were like these comments would suggest, I had the pleasure to work with some very professional individuals, who genuinely cared for those who worked for them.
I worked within the materials and logistics department and a great manager, not Bill! but another B who did all that hw could to help his team.

It is truly a shame that this has happened to the employees of simclar, although the likes of Sam Russell have got away with so many things over the years, criminal in my mind, we must still review the bigger picture, industry is in dire straits in our country and manufacturer's are looking for cheaper alternatives.

I give you this warning ⚠, once all our industry has been moved abroad, cheaper labour etc, prices will rise, once our infrastructure has been desomated these countries will take advantage and labour costs will rocket.
